The numbers are alarming: cyber-attacks have cost €6.5 billion in losses for the construction industry alone in the past five years. According to a recent study by the Center for Economics Research, the sector suffers an above-average number of such attacks. One in three companies has suffered a cyber-attack in the past. The protection of sensitive data such as construction plans and calculations is a decisive competitive factor. If employees use their private chat app for their day-to-day work, they run the risk of spreading important information unprotected. Decision makers who tolerate this practice in their organizations not only risk hacker attacks but also severe penalties for non-compliance with data protection laws.
Tougher legislation takes effect in May
After all, personal data of employees such as sick leave or pay slips must not be accessible to unauthorized third parties. The company is responsible for this. In May 2018, the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will take effect and violations of these new rules can become costly, with fines of up to €20 million euros or up to 4% of a company’s annual turnover possible.
Messenger apps optimize workflows
The advantages of a chat app for construction companies are obvious: direct access to technical documents and the possibility of on-site inspection by means of photos make for faster decisions that can considerably improve workflows and ensure that time and budget constraints are met. Especially when employees work at different locations, communication via messenger apps is easier and more direct. Since all participants can read along in real-time in the chats, the conversation flows much more quickly than in a series of telephone calls.
The Deutsche Post messenger app
With SIMSme Business, Deutsche Post has developed a messenger app that combines the advantages of chat communication with all of the relevant security requirements. The management cockpit is easy to use and allows admins to assign accounts to employees, assign users to different groups, control security settings, and create news channels. New: with the browser version, companies will also be able to use the secure service on their desktops and laptops. It can be easier to type longer texts on a proper keyboard and files can be dragged and dropped directly from the desktop into the chat for quick and easy sharing: no need to spend precious minutes searching through endless layers of folders.
